The Conference programme includes plenary and parallel sessions with speeches, paper presentations and discussion panels. In parallel, a career day will be organized for the students. The event starts with a welcome coffee on Wednesday morning (09:00) and ends with light lunch on Thursday (15:30). The detailed programme can be viewed here.
Opening Speakers:
Christos I. Bouras is Full Professor at the University of Patras, Department of Computer Engineering and Informatics. Also he is a scientific advisor of Research Unit 6 at Computer Technology Institute and Press – Diophantus, Patras, Greece. His research interests include 5G and Beyond Networks, Analysis of Performance of Networking and Computer Systems, Computer Networks and Protocols, Mobile and Wireless Communications, Telematics and New Services, QoS and Pricing for Networks and Services, e-learning, Networked Virtual Environments and WWW Issues. He has extended professional experience in Design and Analysis of Networks, Protocols, Telematics and New Services. He has published more than 450 papers in various well-known refereed books, conferences and journals. He is a co-author of 9 books in Greek and editor of 2 in English. He has been member of editorial board for international journals and PC member and referee in various international journals and conferences. He has participated in R&D projects.
Athanasios Kyriazis is a Professor at the Department of Statistics and Insurance Sciences at the University of Piraeus in the field of Applied Mathematics and New Technologies. He has graduated from the Department of Mathematics of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and holds a PhD degree from the same Department. He has been a visiting researcher in Universities and Research Centers in the U.S.A. and Europe. He has taught a significant number of courses at the undergraduate and postgraduate level, as well as in training programs. He has supervised Doctoral Dissertations and Master’s theses, and has participated in several research programs as the Project Leader. His academic work includes four monographs, eight university textbooks and a great number of scientific publications and papers in international and Greek journals and in conference proceedings. He is an active participant in International and National Conferences and Seminars while he has been the national representative in a significant number of European and international institutions and working groups. In addition, he has participated in Ministerial Councils, meetings, official visits and international collaborations. He has served for several years as the General Secretary of the Ministry of Education and Religious Affairs as well as the Special Secretary for Higher Education at the same Ministry. Finally, he has been a consultant in companies and Institutions in relation to educational and training subjects.
Panagiotis Dimopoulos is Faculty member since 2000 and Professor in Botany and Ecology from 2009 to 2016 in the Department of Environmental and Natural Resources Management and from 2016 onwards in the Department of Biology of the University of Patras. His research interests and key-expertise (1990-2021) lie in: flora and vegetation analysis, conservation and ecology of species and habitats focusing to: inventory, monitoring, assessment and mapping of habitats and ecosystems in protected areas (Greece and Cyprus); biodiversity evaluation and analysis (species and community level); mapping and assessment of ecosystems and their services; vegetation and flora databases; Article 17 (Dir. 92/43/EEC) reporting on the conservation status assessment of habitat types (Greece and Cyprus); conservation policy and National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan for Implementation. Has published 136 articles in international scientific journals (1990-2021), participated with 110 and 90 oral presentations in International and National Conferences respectively. Has participated as lead researcher and to date has coordinated 40 national and 20 European research projects. He serves as (i) Scientific coordinator a) for the preparation and edition in 10 volumes of the Flora of Greece (Flora Hellenica), 120 years after the first and only existing Flora of Greece (Conspectus Flora Graecae, 1904-1908), b) for the edition of the National Biodiversity Strategy and its Action Plan for Implementation in Greece (Ministry of the Environment, Energy and Climate Change, 2013-2014), c) of the Working Group on Nature Conservation policy implementation in Greece with emphasis to the Natura 2000 network (Ministry of the Environment, Energy and Climate Change, 2013-2014). (ii) National Representative in the European Commission on Mapping and Assessment of Ecosystems and their Services (MAES activities, 2014-) – MAES working group. (iii) Deputy Chair of the Natura 2000 National Committee for the Protected Areas of Greece (2010-2013). (iv) Chair of the Natura 2000 National Committee for the Protected Areas of Greece (2020-2023).
Vassilios Makios is a Professor Emeritus at the Dept. of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the University of Patras, and at the Dept of Electronics of the Carleton University in Ottawa. He has been involved in numerous scientific projects, has a lengthy publication record and was influential in the establishment of technology companies in Greece.
Emmanuel Zervakis was born in Athens, Greece in 1975. He received both the Bachelor degree in Physics and the Master degree in microelectronics from University of Patras in 1997 and 1999, respectively. He received the PhD in 2004 from National Technical University of Athens, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. During his PhD. He worked from 2001 up to 2004 to THETA Microelectronics as a Junior integrated circuits designer. He participated in all projects of the company designing both baseband and radio frequency analog circuits introduced to the new transceiver architectures targeting modern wireless communications. He joined THEON Sensors early in 2005 as a Senior Electrical Engineer in the MEMS department and from 2008 he became Electronics Development Manager. His main activities included designing and development of analog and mixed analog/digital integrated circuits and PCB’s for the signal conditioning electronics of the MEMS transducers. He participated either as Project Manager or Technical Leader to various ESA, FP7 and National Funded projects that were successfully implemented. In 2010 became Director of the MEMS Business Unit of THEON Sensors S.A. Dr. Em. Zervakis became the General Manager of European Sensor Systems S.A in 2013, a high tech company developing sensors systems based on MEMS technologies targeting medical, industrial and aerospace applications. Since 2021 he is the Chief Business Officer. He is responsible for corporate strategy, new technologies and business development. He is currently the President of the Hellenic Emerging Technologies Industry Association (HETIA).
Keynote Speakers:
Dimitris Mourtzis is Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Aeronautics of the University of Patras (UP), Vice President of Research and Development of University of Patras, Governing Board Member of the University of Patras at the Clean Aviation Joint Undertaking representing European Academia, Director of Laboratory for Manufacturing Systems and Automation and Founding Member of the Teaching Factory Competence Center. Additionally, he is Member of the Technical Council of the University of Patras, Scientific Manager of the “University of Patras Liaison Office” (Employment, Career and Liaison Department), which aims to connect students and graduates with the professional environment and to acquire new knowledge and skills and Scientific Officer for the General Regulation for the Protection of Personal Data (GDPR) and quality of services, certified by ISO 9001:2015, of the University of Patras. He also presents important administrative work through his participation in committees of both the Technical Chamber of Greece (Coordinator of the Committee on New Technologies and New Materials, Evaluator etc.) and the Region of Western Greece (RWG) (Representative of UP at the Von Karman Institute etc.). He is a Fellow of the International Academy for Production Engineering (CIRP), the International Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC) Manufacturing Modelling for Management and Control (IFAC TC5.2), the International Federation of Information Processing – Advances in Production Management Systems (IFIP WG 5.7). Professor Mourtzis is member of numerous scientific associations including the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME), the Scientific Committee of the International Association of Learning Factories (IALF), the European Factories of the Future Association–EFFRA, the European Manufacturing, and Innovation Research Association (EMIRACLE), the European Aeronautics Science Network / Association EASN and Fellow of the Arsakeia – Tositseia Schools, administered by the Society for Promoting Education and Learning (SPEL), which is a non-profit educational organization. His scientific interests focus on the Design, Planning and Control of Manufacturing Systems and Networks, Robotic Systems, Automation, Augmented, Mixed, and Virtual Reality in Manufacturing, and Manufacturing Processes Modelling and Energy Efficiency. Furthermore, his research interests are also focused on the design, development and implementation of solutions based on the utilization of cutting-edge digital technologies, such as Cloud Technologies, as well as on the development of Product-Service Systems (PSS). He is also actively involved in the Digital Transformation of Manufacturing Companies and Implementation of Industry 4.0 practices. He authored and published the Book “Design and Operation of Production Networks for Mass Personalization in the Era of Cloud Technology” in 2022 (published by Elsevier). He is Specialty Chief Editor, Area Editor and Member of the Editorial Board of several Scopus Indexed International Journals and Guest Editor in several Special Issues. He is also reviewer in more than 120 journals and has organized (Chair/co-Chair) more than 15 International Scientific Conferences. He has published more than 305 publications including refereed journal papers, editorials, book chapters and conference proceedings with a total number of more than 11.200 unique citations (h-index 56).
Dr. Michael Tzannes has spent his career with companies that improve the way people process and communicate digital information. From 1990 to 2012, he was with Aware, Inc. (NASDAQ: AWRE) as Executive Chairman, Chief Executive Officer, and Chief Technical Officer. After a successful IPO in 1996, Aware became a widely recognized communications technology pioneer and the leading supplier of silicon intellectual property to the digital subscriber line (DSL) industry. Michael also founded Aware’s patent management operations and led the sale of DSL, networking and signal processing patents to Intellectual Ventures, Intel, Techquity and others. Since 2012, Michael has been an advisor and informal investor in the start-up ecosystem in Greece. Michael was Chairman and co-Founder of Accusonus which is now part of Meta/Facebook and continues to develop software that democratize content creation, with a focus on audio. He also currently serves as a Board Member at Irida Labs and is on the Advisory Boards of Yodiwo, Athroa Innovations and 5G Ventures. He is also the 2020 recipient of the Innovation Award from the Argo Hellenic Network. Michael is a lifelong innovator and holds patents addressing core technologies in multicarrier DWMT communications, MP3 audio, DSL, Wi-Fi, LTE and IoT communications. His consulting firm, TzPM, provides advisory services for corporate and intellectual property strategy. Michael was valedictorian at the University of Patras, Greece, has a Master’s Degree from the University of Michigan and a Ph.D. from Tufts University, all in Electrical Engineering.
Alexios Birbas is Professor of Electronics in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the University of Patras and Director of the Applied Electronics Lab, Patras Greece. He received the MSEE and PhD degrees from the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis Minnesota USA in 1986 and 1988 respectively. He has also held faculty positions at the Assistant Professor level at the University of Minnesota and at INPG, Grenoble, France. His research interests include: device electronics, optoelectronics, noise and fluctuation problems in electronics, RF and mixed signal high speed circuit design and implementation of sensor read out circuits, smart grid electronics and transactive Energy Systems, smart metering, 5G enabled IoT and Industry 4.0 real time applications, edge computing accelerators and Cyber Physical Systems. Dr. Birbas has also served as a consultant to the Industry and has held industrial managerial positions. He has published over 120 papers in international journals and conference proceedings. He has also co- founded two microelectronics related spin-off companies and has supervised 20 PhD Theses (17 completed).
Invited Speakers:
Michael Dritsas is Head of Cabinet of Dr Christos Dimas Office, the Deputy Minister for Development, and Investments in Greece. Mr Dritsas is a Chartered Mechanical Engineer, M.Sc. in Operations Management & Research, MBA, Chartered Economist, and Chartered Marketer (MCIM). He has worked as a policy advisor to 2 Ministers and 2 Deputy Ministers of Development and Investments in the areas of Research-Technology-Innovation and their intersection with Entrepreneurship. Extensive experience in the implementation of EU co-financed programs in RDI through Structural Funds in Greece. National Delegate (Horizon Europe / EIC). In his last capacity he has a key role in Research and Innovation policymaking by advising the Deputy Minister in decision making through evidence-based recommendations and the implementation of the national R&I strategy.
Spyros Denazis graduated from the Mathematics Department of University of Ioannina, Greece in 1987, and received his PhD in Computing from University of Bradford, UK, in 1993. After a short break fulfilling his military service obligations he worked for two years (1996-1998) for Intaracom SA in the R&D Department as a Project Coordinator mainly in European Projects. In January 1998 he got a new job in Hitachi Europe Ltd acting initially as an industrial research fellow hosted by Cambridge University (1998-2000) and then as a Senior Researcher in the newly established research lab in Cambridge. In 2004 he was appointed Assistant Professor in the Electrical & Computer Engineering Department, University of Patras, Greece, and in 2013 he got elected in the position of Associate Professor. Furtheromore, during the period 2003-2010 he had been acting as a research Consultant in the Hitachi research lab of Sophia Antipolis, France. Currently, he is leading the research group of Network Architectures & Management Group that is carrying out research in the context of the Future Internet. Indicative some of the research topics are: P2P Live Streaming, Software Defined Networks, Identity Management, Resource Management in Cloud Computing. Finally, in the context of Future Internet Research Experimentation they have built an experimental infrastructure, the Patras Platform for Experimentation, which can be used by third parties to carry out experimentation. Dr Evangelos Gogolides is a Chemical Engineer from NTUA-Greece, and holds an MSc and a PhD (1990) both from MIT-USA. His thesis work was on plasma processing and simulation, and he did post-doctoral research on microlithography with Michael Hatzakis. He is presently research director at NCSR “Demokritos”. He authored more than 290 publications (h-index 52 google scholar, 8600 citations, 365 documents, h-index-45 scopus-6820 citations, 294 documents) and 14 patent families, and coordinated several research projects on Nanofabrication and Microfluidics. He has founded the plasma nanotechnology laboratory at NCSR Demokritos. Dr Gogolides is a co-founder of two spin-off companies: Nanoplasmas pc and Nanometrisis pc. His current interests include microfabrication, Vacuum and atmospheric Pressure Plasma (Nano)technology, Surface engineering and wetting control for metals, polymers, and membranes, Water cleaning and Harvesting via superhydrophobic surfaces, Water cleaning, microfluidics and Lab on Chip, nanometrology and plasma simulation. He is a board member of the iMNESociety, President of the Hellenic Micro&NanoSociety, chair of several large international conferences (MNE 1997, MNE 2008, MNE 2019, i-plasmanano 2016 etc) and editor in chief of Microelectronic Engineering (MEE 2011-2021), and Micro and Nano Engineering (MNE 2021-on) Journals of Elsevier. He has been debuty director of IMEL(2005-6), member of its advisory board (2004-7), member of the NCSR Research Committee (2012-on), ERC Consolidator grant Panel member, and coordinator or PI of several research projects (EU and industry funded with a total research income of more than 12MEuro during the past 20 years). Dr Apostolos Vantarakis is Professor in the Public Health Laboratory at the Department of Medicine of the University of Patras, Greece. He was an Ass. Professor in the Laboratory of Hygiene and Environment Protection at the Department of Medicine at the Democritus University of Thrace, Greece for 4 years (June 2004-May 2008). He has specialty in Environmental Hygiene and Epidemiology. His Ph.D is on Public Health/Environmental Health awarded by Medical School, University of Patras, Greece. His M.Sc is in Genetic Toxicology awarded by University College of Swansea, Wales, UK. His major degree is in Biology from University of Patras, Greece. His research has focused on the impact of environmental microbiological quality especially water and wastewater to Public Health. Also his research areas include risk assessment of the water and wastewater as it concerns the human health. He has performed several studies concerning with the water quality of potable water and wastewater. He has an accredited laboratory of Environmental Hygiene with two units, Environmental Microbiology and Environmental Chemistry. Also he has worked in several studies concerning with waste removal methods. He has been representative of Ministry of Development in EU for the project COST 929/ENVIRONET which is concerned with viruses in water and food. He has participated as an expert of Ministry of Agriculture in workshops organized by EU during years 2002-2006 for subjects of virological quality of food. He is representative of Greek Standardization Body (ΕLOT) in Technical Committee CEN/TAG4/WG6 for standardization of molecular methods detection of viruses in food. Finally, He has large experience on competitive research projects, national and European. From his research, he has published 120 peer reviewed research articles in foreign language journals in the area of Environmental Hygiene, 10 articles in Greek journals and 1 article in a book. He has been participated in International conferences with 55 announcements and in Greek conferences with 58 announcements. He has conducted 25 speeches as an invited speaker in several conferences. Also he has taught or participated in 12 seminars. During his research activities, he has been chief researcher in 30 research projects funded by variable Greek and European authorities. Also he has completed 20 studies relating with water and wastewater quality. During the last decade, he participated in more than 25 research projects, while he was the group partner in three European research projects. He has supervised 3 PhD theses, while now he supervises 3 master’s thesis and 5 PhD theses.
