Abstract

Energy autonomy and undisrupted operation in IoT applications are key parameters for successful deployment of Wireless Sensor Network applications. Primary batteries become less of a viable solution for such applications, due to their short lifetime and increased replacement cost. Energy harvesting technologies have been adopted to power sensor nodes in hard-to-reach environments. In this paper, we present a commercialized energy harvesting power supply unit, capable of harvesting available energy from the surrounding environment. The unit, along with an energy balance software library, can ensure the perpetual operation of commercial IoT nodes. We present results from an installation and end-to-end application in a maritime monitoring environment.
